Areas of application for local and district cooling

Local and district cooling systems function in a similar way to local and district heating systems; however, they transport cooling instead of heat. This is achieved by centrally cooling a carrier fluid, before it is delivered to the customers via a pre-insulated pipe network. These systems are an advantage, particularly in densely populated urban areas, large office complexes, data centres, shopping centres and industrial facilities.

We manufacture all kinds of different pipes for local and district cooling systems. The particular feature: all ISOPLUS systems have high-quality pre-insulation and thus ensure minimum energy losses – and this not only benefits the environment but also the economy.

  • High energy efficiency: the excellent insulation minimises cold losses and leads to a higher energy yield.

  • Reliability and durability: robust materials and careful processing ensure a long life and reliable performance.

  • Cost efficiency: the reduction of cold losses and the durability of the systems enable substantial long-term cost savings.

Challenges

Regardless of whether planning local or district cooling networks, the focus is always on ensuring that the cooling energy reaches consumers efficiently and without notable temperature losses. ISOPLUS pipe systems ensure this by using high-quality materials and first-class insulation technologies. Our solutions are available with different dimensions and specifications to meet individual requirements.

  • High-temperature district cooling: typically for applications with temperatures above 12 °C.
  • Medium-temperature district cooling: suitable for temperature ranges between 4 °C and 12 °C.
  • Low-temperature district cooling: tespecially for industrial applications that require temperatures below 4 °C.

Increasing importance of local and district cooling

District cooling systems play an increasingly large role in Europe’s energy transition. Instead of opting for many individual cooling solutions, these systems concentrate on central cold generation, which efficiently uses waste heat from industrial processes or renewable energy and distributes it uniformly.

  • Efficiency increase: central remote cooling systems optimise the utilisation of energy by efficiently converting surplus heat sources into cooling, thus reducing the demand on decentralised systems.
  • Greater utilisation of renewable energy: district cooling systems enable the seamless integration of renewable energy sources such as geothermal energy or the storage of surplus energy, which further increases their importance to energy transition.
  • Reduction of emissions: through increased use of renewable energy, district cooling systems make a decisive contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which makes them a sustainable alternative.
  • Increased stability and reliability: diversification of the energy sources used increases the stability of the cold supply and reduces dependency on external factors such as weather conditions or energy availability.
  • Promoting sustainable urban development: in urban and densely populated areas, district cooling systems support sustainable development by optimising energy consumption and contributing to the reduction of the urban carbon footprint.
