The project to expand Berlin's district heating network plays a key role in achieving the city's climate protection targets. The plan is to build a supply line around three kilometres long between the Lichterfelde CHP plant and Händelplatz in order to reduce CO2 emissions and improve the security of supply for around 11,000 residential units.

Large CO2 savings potential from 2026

To achieve the state of Berlin's climate protection targets expansion of the district heating supply is a significant contribution. To this end, BEW is planning to expand the district heating network with the construction of a supply pipeline between the Lichterfelde CHP plant and Händelplatz along the entire length of Hindenburgdamm. The construction project, with a route length of around three kilometres and a total of 13 construction phases, is to be completed between be realised between the end of 2022 and mid-2026.

The Hindenburgdamm grid reinforcement will enable BEW to provide additional heating capacity for its customers and customers and contributes to decarbonisation as part of the decarbonisation as part of the plant transformation. Furthermore security of supply is increased and further customers can be customers can be connected to the Berlin district heating network can be connected to the Berlin district heating network.

The strengthening of the district heating network will create the basis for the connection of 39 megawatts – the equivalent of approx. 11,000 residential units. This will be accompanied by a reduction in CO2 emissions of 11,000 tonnes per year from tonnes per year from 2026.
