The Porthos project in the Port of Rotterdam is a groundbreaking carbon capture and storage initiative aimed at reducing CO2 emissions by transporting captured carbon from local industries to offshore storage sites. With a capacity to store 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually, ISOPLUS supports this project by providing specialized pre-insulated piping solutions essential for its infrastructure.

Challenges

The Porthos project is a vital initiative located in the Port of Rotterdam, focused on transporting and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from various industrial sources. Set to be operational by 2026, the project involves constructing a 2.6 km onshore and 20 km offshore pipeline to capture and compress approximately 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

This CO2 will be stored in empty natural gas fields beneath the North Sea floor, with a total capacity of 37 million tonnes. The challenges include ensuring the efficient and safe transportation of CO2 while managing the technical complexities of constructing a large-scale pipeline system that integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructure.

Contributions

ISOPLUS plays a crucial role in the Porthos project by supplying 2.6 km of DN400/560 and 72m DN1050/1200 rigid pipes specifically designed for the onshore transportation of liquid CO2, from the compressor station, where the insulated pipes are needed.

These high-quality, pre-insulated pipes are essential for maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the CO2 transport system. By leveraging its expertise and advanced technology, ISOPLUS ensures that the pipeline meets the demanding requirements of the project, contributing significantly to the overall sustainability goals of the Porthos initiative.
